Common Core Math Top Words 2013 The Original Study is a classroom supplement for students, parents, teachers and administrators who need better options for understanding the language aspects of the common core math standards, math vocabulary withinMoreCommon Core Math Top Words 2013 The Original Study is a classroom supplement for students, parents, teachers and administrators who need better options for understanding the language aspects of the common core math standards, math vocabulary within textbooks and the math vocabulary and support vocabulary used by teachers within a common core math standards driven classroom.

Included are more than 742 middle school and high school math vocabulary words ranked in order from easiest to hardest for maximum standards-driven informed instruction. Three diagnostic (pre & post) tests are included. Concise definitions for all words are included and each is indexed to the standard from which the word came. There is a discussion format for all words. Ranked folded-page study sheets are included for all levels. Common Core Math Standards require that vocabulary be taught in math classes, but which words should be taught / learned?

This document contains words used in the math standards ranked according to usage as measured by our video files (find free playlists at CCM42.com). This document, originally called the VRIP or Vocabulary Ranking Intervention Protocol and now called Common Core Math Standards Top Words, is the original study which showed the need for not only math vocabulary to be taught in the math classroom but support vocabulary as well.

The original study showed many support vocabulary words to be misunderstood by students. Here is just one example, the study showed the word “adjacent”, used in many math textbooks, math standards and verbally by teachers in math classes, to be understood by 40% of 9th graders to mean “across from” which is the opposite meaning of the correct definition of “next to”. The word adjacent is not a math vocabulary word but a support math vocabulary word as it is used to understand math concepts (sides of a shape may be adjacent to each other or angles may be adjacent to each other, etc.).

So math classes, especially Common Core Math Standards math classes, must provide direct instruction on not just math vocabulary, but math support vocabulary. But which support math vocabulary words to teach? We first combed the standards, textbooks and verbal usage of support math vocabulary to find 742 math vocabulary words and support words. We then ranked the words in order of most usage according to hour searched video files. Then two options remain within the discretion and best judgment of math teachers. One option is to teach / learn words that are most searched because they are in greatest usage.

The other option is to teach / learn the least used words as these are possibly less known. A more balanced approach may be to teach / learn from both ends of the spectrum, those most searched and those least searched. Use the Common Core Math Standards Top Words usage list to guide instruction and learning of words used in the math standards (see free playlists at CCM42.com).

This document is the original study conducted back in 2003 which culled the 742 math vocabulary words and the many misunderstood support math vocabulary words. The main goal of the study is to show how many students are not correctly processing support words in math classes, like the above example of “adjacent” and to provide a list of possible choices of math support vocabulary to teach within the common core math standards driven classroom.
